Top Tips For Summer Make Up

Summer makeup is a funny thing. It’s essential but it often feels like a chore, a chore that’ll run down your face in gooey streams every time the sun comes out. Fortunately, there are many tips and tricks that can be used to achieve a flawless summer finish. Most are relatively inexpensive to carry out and almost all of them are used by professional makeup artists and experts.

Your biggest enemy is most definitely the sun and hot temperatures. However, longevity and durability are also an issue – especially for girls who work long hours in stuffy offices or showrooms. The perfect summer look is one that lasts the day and can be used for a quick transfer from afternoon to evening, from workwear to party time. If you can hit the bars after work without having to retouch your makeup, you’re a very lucky girl indeed. Here’s how to be one of those girls.

Keep It Simple

This is the most important rule when it comes to summer makeup – you’ve got to keep it barely there. Think light, fresh and clean. Go for pale shadows and avoid heavy eyeliners and lipsticks. The bolder and heavier the shade, the quicker and faster it will run or stain. Nude colours are absolutely superb for summer. They’ll ensure that you look naturally flawless. When it’s very hot outside, cover up blemishes with concealer and leave the foundation on the shelf. That way, you won’t have to worry about blotting away shine, says makeup artist Emily Kate Warren. If you’re not comfortable going without foundation, you could always try a tinted moisturiser to even out your skin tone.

Make Mascara Last

One of the worst things about summer makeup is the dreaded panda eye. You’ve been hard at work for 8 hours and you leave the office with dirty, great marks down your cheeks, despite the fact that your makeup was flawlessly applied this morning. There are a few ways to tackle running mascara, fortunately. One of them is to simply wear less of it. Another is to buy specially formulated heavy duty products that are designed with extra staying power. The third is to employ this little trick – apply a clear mascara to lashes after applying regular mascara. It will seal and lock in the colour for much longer. This is a good tip for those who are allergic to or irritated by waterproof products.

Brighten Up Your Cheeks

According to LA Times Journalist Melissa Magsaysay, a bright blusher colour balances out nude tones and makes skin look super healthy and radiant. As skin tones tan and darken, blusher colours should get brighter rather than deeper. Cream blushers tend to work very well in summer because they’re very lightweight and easy to apply.

Time To Shimmer

Makeup with a slight shimmer effect looks great in summer – the sun catches it and you instantly turn into a bronzed goddess. Don’t overdo it though. Stick to just one shimmery product. Use a foundation with a slight shimmer or use a blusher with the same effect – using both will just make you look like a slightly sticky flesh-coloured glitter ball. Sweep shimmery blusher over the apples of your cheeks for a subtle, elegant effect, says Huffington Post journalist Dana Oliver.

Say Goodbye To Heavy Lipstick

It’s time to say au revoir to those postbox red shades of lipstick and deep crimson glosses. They don’t work nearly as well in the summer as they do in the winter. As soon as temperatures start to rise, swap your heavy shades for SFP protected balms and glosses in light, tan tones.

Creating a great summer look doesn’t have to be a chore – it just takes a little adjusting. Blow out those winter cobwebs and experiment with some new looks. You’ll be making heads turn before you know it.
